A refreshing and aromatic American classic, the Mint Julep features bourbon, muddled fresh mint, and simple syrup, traditionally served over crushed ice in a silver julep cup.
In a chilled julep cup (or old fashioned glass), gently muddle 8-10 fresh mint leaves with 0.5 ounce (15 ml) simple syrup. Muddle just enough to release the mint's oils, avoiding tearing the leaves too much, which can create bitterness.
Add 2.5 ounces (75 ml) bourbon to the glass. Fill the cup generously with 1 serving of crushed ice.
Stir well with a bar spoon for about 20-30 seconds, or until the outside of the cup becomes frosty. This indicates proper chilling and dilution.
Top with more crushed ice to create a dome. Garnish with a large, fresh mint sprig, placed directly into the ice near the straw, allowing the aroma to hit the nose with each sip.
